I am always amazed at how many French expressions I hear American people using. The latest one I heard, “Quelle surprise,” was on the TV show “Revenge” (please don’t judge me).
It basically means, “What a surprise.” The only difference is that, in English, people tend to use it most often in a sarcastic way. We do that in French as well, but it is equally common to use it genuinely.
Je viens de gagner un million de dollars à la loterie! Quelle surprise! (I just won a million dollars from the lottery! Quelle surprise!)
Samantha, ma pire ennemie, porte la même robe que moi. Quelle surprise! (Samantha, my worst enemy, is wearing the same dress as me. Quelle surprise!)
